Flu and Pneumococcal Vaccination
Influenza vaccination is the best protection against the flu for at risk groups including all patients over 65years. This is an annual vaccination.
The flu vaccination is available free of charge from Shandon Medical Centre for all patients over 65 years (private, GP visit and medical card patients), pregnant women, for those patient with pre-existing conditions that put them at risk and for health care workers as well as those living with at risk patients.
This year for the first time in Ireland children aged 2yrs to 12yrs can avail of the free nasal flu vaccination. We encourage parents to ensure their children avail of this vaccination as the flu is highly infectious and children can spread the virus easily amongst themselves and to other family members.
Pneumococcal vaccine (also known as the pneumonia vaccine) protects against serious and potentially life-threatening pneumococcal infection.
There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine in Ireland:
The first type called Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) is given to babies and forms part of the Primary Childhood Immunisation Schedule. The Childhood Immunisation Program is free of charge for all children.
This vaccine and administration is free for all at risk patients who hold a valid medical and GP visit card. For at risk patients who do not have a medical card or GP visit card, the vaccine is free but a consultation fee applies”
